MPR Eatery sits quietly on Main Road in Havelock, a spot where the steady flow of locals and travelers converge for straightforward, satisfying meals in a relaxed setting. This place functions as both a café and takeout restaurant but leans more toward a casual dining experience where you can settle in or grab something good on the go. The atmosphere is unpretentious, with welcoming staff who seem genuinely glad to see you, making it easy to linger over a coffee or something heartier.

If you’re passing through Havelock—often known as the mussel capital of the world—MPR Eatery feels like the natural choice for a lunch break. The menu focuses largely on simple, well-executed comfort food with a clear local seafood influence. Mussels are a standout here, served a few different ways including steamed in a creamy white wine broth or a lively coriander, ginger, chilli, and coconut cream. For those not as keen on shellfish, the beef burger with its homemade patty, fried egg, and smoky bacon or the veg-friendly falafel-style vegan burger offer hearty alternatives that draw repeat visits.

The pace here is easy-going, with a vibe that matches Havelock’s small-town charm. Locals pop in for friendly hellos and reliable meals, while travelers use it as a refreshing pause on drives between Picton and Nelson, appreciating that the scenic coastal route brings them right to this modest eatery. It’s especially pleasant on a sunny afternoon when you can grab a table by the window or enjoy a quick bite before exploring the waterfront or local shops.

MPR Eatery also offers some thoughtful choices for those who might want a small indulgence after their meal. While the cake selection isn’t the headline event, it’s well-regarded enough to be worth at least considering—though the generous servings of mains sometimes leave less room for dessert.

In essence, this is a spot best suited to seafood lovers and anyone looking for a relaxed, no-fuss meal in a town known for its marine flavors. It’s approachable, local, and connected to the slower rhythm of Havelock life, serving as a practical and enjoyable stop whether you’re a visitor passing through or a community member looking for solid food and a friendly face.

Best mussels I have ever had. Light, fresh and tender, cooked perfectly. And the town Havelock is nice to stop by for lunch.

We stumbled across this cafe while travelling thru Havelock North. Found this place to open on Monday and had their delicious mussels! Friendly staff too :)

Lovely coffee and the food was great. We had the vegetarian zucchini wrap and an egg & bacon muffin. Delicious!! Definitely worth a stop here if you’re driving between Picton and Nelson. It’s a beautiful scenic drive and will take you about the same time as going via the faster highway which is nearly 30km longer!

Amazing place where we have had lunch. The seafood chowder was (waaw!) the best and I do highly recommend it for seafood fans.

A small, inconspicuous restaurant that you shouldn't just drive past. We were greeted by extremely friendly staff. The selection of cakes is really excellent. However, we opted for something warm, but with the option of eating one of these delicious cakes. We had a beef burger and a steak burger. It was delicious! Unfortunately, it was so delicious that there was no space left for a piece of cake. But we had to have a coffee to go. That was also very tasty.

Delicious, large portions. Mussels done right. The chef is one of the longest standing in the region. Best at cooking this dish.

Absolutely the best place to enjoy nice warm mussels on a rainy Havelock day with pelting rain. I drove all the way after arriving from Picton (Interislander from Wellington) on a day with bad weather. Antonio and his mum (the founders of the Mussel Pot nearby), Melissa and team were a breath of fresh air, they really turned the gloomy mood (see next para) into joy with excellent service and delicious food. The Mussel Pot which my crew originally wanted to eat at had such awful manners and disgusting hubris, like icy floes in my veins; we asked them if there was a table, and the lady replied, What do you think? Dreadful... But this place is all warmth and sunshine There's a nice quote about no "fast food" being served but food with quality and from the heart, written on the whiteboard tucked away in the kitchen. I told Antonio to turn it into a T-shirt, I would buy it! The team here has a world class attitude towards service. Antonio, mum and Melissa, your team (and awesome mussels) rock. Highly recommended. (Antonio and mum sold the Mussel Pot and started this new place not too long ago, and they still bring that wonderful mojo with them in the form of this new place)

Tracey and the team at MPR just get it. Best coffee in Havelock — no contest. Friendly, local, and the eggs… well, they’re the kind that make you pause mid-bite and think, yep, this is why I come back. Doors say 8am, but give Tracey a smile and a wave and you might just find yourself sipping that first early brew around 7:30. That’s the charm of a true small-town gem — real people, real care. My regular stop whenever I’m staying in Havelock or just rolling through. Consistency, warmth, and damn good coffee. Highly recommend. Five stars.
